At Key Stage 4, Child Development is a popular subject with excellent results, consistently enabling students to access Post-16 courses, particularly at Colchester Institute. We offer the OCR Cambridge National Level 1/2 in Child Development, a dynamic and engaging course designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how children develop from conception through to five years of age.

This vocational qualification provides practical skills and theoretical knowledge essential for anyone interested in careers working with children. Students will explore a range of fascinating topics including:

  • Reproduction, Parenthood, and Pre-conception Health: Understanding the basics of human reproduction, the responsibilities of parenthood, and the importance of health before conception.

  • Antenatal Care and Preparation for Birth: Learning about the care provided during pregnancy and the different stages and methods of birth.

  • Postnatal Care and the Health of the Child: Examining the care required after birth for both mother and baby, and understanding common childhood illnesses and health practices.

  • Growth and Development: Investigating the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of children from birth to five years, including milestones and factors influencing development.

  • Nutritional Needs: Exploring the dietary requirements of young children and the importance of healthy eating.

  • Childhood Illnesses and Safeguarding: Identifying common childhood illnesses and understanding the crucial aspects of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Through a blend of theoretical study and practical activities, students will develop research skills, analytical abilities, and an understanding of the diverse needs of children. This course is ideal for those considering careers in childcare, education, healthcare, or any field involving working with young people, providing a solid foundation for further study at college or university.
