Primary Transition

Starting secondary school is a big step! It's exciting to think about new subjects, new friends, and new experiences, but it can also feel a little daunting. To help you and your child navigate this transition smoothly, here's some information and advice:
1. Prepare and Visit:
  • Open evening picOpen Days/Evenings: Attend our open days or Open Evening. This allows your child to explore the school, meet teachers, and get a feel for the education that we offer.

  • Induction Day: In late June, we run an induction day for incoming students. This day can help ease anxiety and allow children to get used to the school grounds and meet some of their new classmates and teachers.

2. Communication is Key:
  • Talk Openly: Encourage your child to share their feelings and anxieties about the transition. Listen patiently and offer reassurance and support.
  • Meet with Teachers: Schedule a meeting with your child's primary school teachers to discuss any concerns that you may have. We have excellent relationships with all eth local Primary Schools and this information can help us make the transition to The Stanway School a smooth one.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on our school newsletters, our website and our social media accounts to get a flavour of what life is like at The Stanway School.
3. Practical Preparations:
  • Screenshot 2024 07 16 101447School Uniform: Ensure your child has the correct school uniform and that it fits well. For more information, see our School Uniform page.
  • Equipment: It really helps to settle in if you have everything you need! You can purchase necessary equipment like stationery, bags, and any specific items required for subjects like art or technology at most retail outlets. We also send all students and parents a September Information Booklet before the start of each year to help everyone be fully prepared with all the euipment they need.
  • Time Management: Help your child develop good time management skills to manage homework and extracurricular activities. Plan out the week and ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for family time, exercise and socialising - these are all impotrant parts of life too!
4. Focus on the Positives:
  • Stanway 123New Opportunities: The Stanway School is a very busy place! Students will get all sorts of opportunities to experience - so emphasise the exciting new subjects, clubs, and memories that await your child.
  • Making Friends: Encourage your child to be open and friendly and to seek out opportunities to connect with new classmates. A great way to do this is to sign up to extracurricular clubs.
  • Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate your child's achievements, both big and small, throughout their first year of secondary school. We have regular rewards schemes and give out Stanway Standards poits in lessons and around the school when students demonstrate our core values. These can be exchanged for various prizes.
5. Remember, it's a Journey:

The transition to secondary school is a gradual process. There may be some initial challenges, but with support and encouragement, your child will soon settle in and thrive at The Stanway School. We look forward to welcoming you into our school community!
