Physical Education
Head of Department: Mr S Wade
At The Stanway School, we believe that school sport and physical activity are a fundamental aspect of school life, offering a rich, varied, and engaging curriculum designed to inspire every student! Our Physical Education department strives to engage all students to appreciate the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, whilst inspiring everyone to succeed and excel. Our department ethos, "Sport for all" and "Sport for life," actively encourages every student to participate, achieve, and enjoy sport regardless of their ability. Students are encouraged to partake in a range of exciting extracurricular activities, available to all, helping them become confident and independent learners who will hopefully continue to participate in and appreciate sport and physical activity far beyond their school years.
In Key Stage 3, students are introduced to or develop fundamental skills across a wide array of sports, including Tag Rugby, Netball, Football, Basketball, Dance, and fitness. These skills are honed in both isolated drills and pressured game situations, with activities delivered in four-week blocks. Students learn essential rules and regulations for basic competitive play and gain an understanding of warm-ups and cool-downs, even exploring the muscles of the body and their movements. As they progress, they delve into tactics, outwitting opponents in competitive environments, covering sports like table tennis, handball, trampolining, athletics (track and field), rounders, and cricket. Year 9 also introduces theoretical aspects of body systems, components of fitness, and diet and nutrition, providing a foundational understanding for exam-based PE.
For GCSE PE, the curriculum takes a deeper dive into theoretical concepts alongside practical application. Students explore physical training, including components of fitness, testing, and applying training principles, as well as injury prevention. They examine engagement patterns in sport, commercialisation, ethical and socio-cultural issues, and sports psychology. Practical lessons in Year 10 cover activities such as Rugby, Badminton, Netball, Trampolining, and Dance, with students refining their abilities in chosen sports throughout Year 11. The course culminates in comprehensive revision and preparation for exams, including practical moderation sessions in various sports, ensuring students are well-prepared to excel. Come join us and discover the incredible benefits of sport and physical activity at The Stanway School!
