Sports Day 2025

Shakespeare Takes Glory as Stanway School Celebrates Sporting Success
The Stanway School’s annual Sports Day culminated in a thrilling afternoon of track events on July 18th, bringing to a close the year's house competition. Following on from the field events held a week prior, students from Years 7 to 10 battled it out for their houses – Gainsborough, Wellington, Nightingale, Shakespeare, and Rutherford – in a bid to claim the coveted Sports Day trophy.
The atmosphere was electric as sprinters lined up for their races and middle-distance runners paced themselves. While Wellington and Nightingale showed early dominance, particularly in the Year 7 and 8 categories across both track and field events, it was Shakespeare House that ultimately demonstrated incredible consistency and depth across all year groups, clinching the overall Sports Day title.
The day was filled with moments of impressive athleticism and friendly competition. The crowds cheered enthusiastically as students pushed themselves to their limits, showcasing their dedication and determination.
A standout performance came from Bobby in Year 10, who had an exceptional afternoon on the track. Not only did Bobby secure victory in both his 100m and 200m finals, but he also etched his name into the school's history books by breaking the 200m school record with an astounding time of 23.31 seconds.
"It was fantastic to see such high levels of participation and sportsmanship," commented Mr Player, Head of School. "Every student gave their all for their house, and the level of talent on display, especially from individuals like Bobby, was truly inspiring."
Following the student races, the staff even had a go, with the departmental staff relay race proving to be a more closely contested race than many first expected! Special mention must go to Mr Stuart who ran a stunning second leg for the Maths department and to Mr Player who, despite falling on the final leg, got back up and managed to complete the race. The Maths department were the overall victors and now have the bragging rights.
The department race was followed up by a Year Teams Egg and Spoon race. Whilst the race began well, the sportsmanship element quickly deteriorated, with some very questionable egg holding from many participants! With so much cheating, it was impossible to decide upon a winner (though it was good fun to watch)!
Congratulations to Shakespeare House on their well-deserved victory, and to all students who participated with such enthusiasm and competitive spirit. Sports Day once again proved to be a highlight in the school calendar, fostering teamwork, resilience, and celebrating the athletic talents within The Stanway School community.
