Modern Foreign Languages

Languages can take you anywhere! Through our MFL curriculum, we will open the door into a new language and its culture! Here at Stanway our students will embark on a journey that shows them a world of opportunities and shapes confident global citizens.
From Year 7 students will begin to learn one of the three languages offered here at Stanway. Either French, German or Spanish. They will explore how to talk about themselves and express a range of opinions on hobbies, school and family. They will improve memory and problem-solving skills as they navigate this exciting, new world! Exploring the language through listening, reading, writing and speaking, students will gain confidence with their growing ability.
Throughout Year 8 and 9 students build their knowledge of topics such as Where You Live, Holidays, Technology and Healthy Living. They will discover how to talk in a range of tenses and explore the culture of countries that speak the language studied. By the end of Key Stage 3 they will have a solid foundation in the vocabulary, grammar and phonics required to take them confidently into the GCSE
course.
In Key Stage 4, students will master the language and grammar required to be successful at GCSE.
The course is divided into three themes:
- People and lifestyle
Talking about themselves and relationships with others, healthy lifestyles and the word of work and education.
- Popular culture
Talking about free-time, customs and festivals and the world of celebrities.
- Communication and the world around us
Talking about travel and tourism, technology and the environment.
MFL opens countless doors into a variety of careers in a world where multiculturism is more important than ever.
