Head of Department: Mrs J Higgon
Embark on a captivating journey across our planet with our Geography curriculum, where you'll explore the dynamic interactions between people and places! In Key Stage 3, you'll become a true geographer, mastering essential skills like map reading, understanding urban changes in places like Colchester, and even conducting local fieldwork. We delve into fascinating topics such as weather and climate, the unique ecosystems of deserts, and the powerful forces of rivers and coasts. You'll gain a global perspective by exploring the human and physical geography of diverse regions like Africa, India, and the Middle East, and grapple with significant global issues like conflict and the role of superpowers.
Moving into Key Stage 4, our GCSE Geography course offers a rigorous and highly relevant exploration of both physical and human environments. You'll develop advanced geographical skills, interpreting complex data from photos, text, and graphs, and prepare for a pre-release research task. We investigate the "Changing Economic World," examining global development gaps and comparing economies like the UK and Nigeria. The "Living World" unit takes you into the heart of tropical rainforests and hot deserts, exploring their unique challenges and human impacts. You'll also become an expert on "Physical Landscapes," understanding how coasts and rivers shape our world, from dramatic cliffs to floodplains, and the strategies used to manage them. Finally, the "Challenges of Natural Hazards" module will see you analyze the causes, impacts, and responses to tectonic events like earthquakes and volcanoes, as well as atmospheric hazards like hurricanes, alongside the critical issue of climate change. Geography is a truly solid subject that provides invaluable analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, making it an excellent foundation for a vast array of Post-16 courses, including environmental science, urban planning, international relations, and many more!
