Music
Head of Department: Mr R Hanlon
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Music at our school, where creativity flourishes and every student can find their rhythm! We believe that high-quality music tuition from the very start of a child's education is incredibly important and plays a beneficial role throughout their studies. Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to introduce students to a wide variety of musical contexts and to ensure all students have a strong foundation of musicianship on which to develop and build their skills. At The Stanway School, we are exceptionally well-equipped with spaces perfect for bands, choirs, and ensembles; and we passionately encourage students to dive into the rich cultural life of the department by creating their own ensembles with friends and classmates, providing numerous extra-curricular opportunities to explore their passion and talent!
At Key Stage 3, students develop core musicianship through singing, keyboard skills, music theory, and note-reading, even starting on the ABRSM Grade 1 Theory syllabus. They explore composition for film using both traditional and digital methods, learn to play orchestral instruments like violin, flute, and trumpet, and delve into the world of "Hooks and Riffs" by creating their own leadsheets and pop song covers. The curriculum also introduces exciting genres like film music (including horror!), Japanese Taiko drumming, blues, jazz, and rock music, culminating in "Battle of the Bands" style performances and opportunities to perform at "StanFest."
For GCSE Music, students embark on a journey of composing, performing, and appraising. They are introduced to musical forms and devices, develop their free compositions, and select solo performance repertoire. They also engage with ensemble music, exploring genres from jazz to chamber music and musical theatre, with opportunities to record their performances and participate in recitals. The curriculum also covers film music and popular/rock music, including set works like Toto's "Africa."
Alternatively, for those interested in a more vocational pathway, the BTEC Music course offers practical insights into the music industry. Students learn about copyright, venue management, job roles, and health and safety, gaining hands-on experience by planning and hosting lunchtime concerts. They delve into live sound equipment setup, marketing, and communication within a team. Later, they are introduced to music sequencing, creating their own music using Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), and even manage their own music product by working in teams to produce, market, and publish an album. This course also covers live sound setup, allowing students to plan and create their own individual setups.
Whether composing, performing, or analyzing, our Music curriculum inspires a lifelong appreciation for music and equips students with valuable skills for diverse pathways within the creative industries.
