Home Learning

You will be aware that the school sets homework for your child on a regular basis and we are keen to see that this “home learning” enhances their understanding of the subjects they study and adds value to the work they do in school.

We recognise that homework, particularly when there appears to be a lot to do, can be daunting for some children, particularly those in Year 7. Hence we have put together what we feel is a realistic schedule for each key stage and subject area. Help is at hand for those students who require help with homework. Members of staff regularly offer assistance to students, before school, at break and lunchtimes. There is also a homework club which operates after school in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) each Tuesday and Thursday until 4.15 pm.

Form tutors take an active interest in all their tutees’ learning and they make weekly checks of students’ planners to ensure that homework is being recorded. Please use the planner to communicate with us should you have any concerns relating to homework.

Occasionally, there may appear to be several pieces set on one day. However, homework is rarely expected to be handed in the next day and therefore, there is an opportunity for your child to manage what they do more evenly throughout the week. Homework tasks can also be viewed electronically via the ‘ClassCharts’ website which can be accessed using the Stanway School website or by downloading the App.

Homework is set on a weekly basis by the majority of departments: English, Mathematics, Science, MFL, History and Geography. However, the following departments will set homework at least twice per half term: RE, Drama, Computing, Technology, Citizenship, Art, Music and PE. KS3 students should expect to spend at least 30 minutes per subject. Please note however, the English and MFL departments set 2 HW tasks: a reading or vocab homework as well as written task each week. KS4 students will be set tasks for each of their option subjects as well as the usual core subjects each week. Students at KS4 should expect to spend at least one hour for each homework task set.

Please contact the school reception should you have any further questions regarding homework.

How can parents & carers help?

  • Provide a space / routine for completing Home Learning
  • Talk to your child about the task and what they have learnt.
  • Praise good effort
  • Ensure that your child has checked their work for spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • If there is an Assessment criteria, check that your child has used it to structure their work.
