PSHE Overview of Topics

OVERVIEW OF TOPICS COVERED BY THE SRE PROGRAMME

Year 7 

In Year 7, PSHE materials are delivered in form time sessions with the students form tutors. These sessions are initially based on forming friendships and dealing with the transition from primary school to secondary school as this can be daunting for many of the students.

Some of the other topics covered in this year group include:

  1. Healthy Lifestyles including: healthy eating, exercise, smoking, managing their mental health, drinking energy drinks and the consequences of poor diets.
  2. Puberty
  3. Friendships – what makes good friendships and the challenges with poor relationships
  4. Budgeting and finances

Year 8

In Year 8, PSHE materials are delivered in form time sessions with the students form tutors. These sessions are often based on careers and setting up the students with the knowledge that they need in order to make informed options choices at the end of the year.

Some of the other topics covered in this year group include:

  1. Self-Image, Body Image (Male and Female) and Sexuality 
  2. Pregnancy
  3. First Aid covering issues such as CPR, applying bandages, allergic reactions and the recovery position.
  4. Careers – making informed options choices in order to set them up for their future careers. 

Year 9

In Year 9, PSHE materials are delivered in form time sessions with the students form tutors. These sessions are focused on careers, Citizenship and business skills. 

Year 9 also have stand-alone PSHE sessions which cover the following issues:

  1. Managing their mental health e.g. issues with stress, anxiety, self-harm, body image and eating disorders
  2. Alcohol and drug awareness
  3. Financial studies covering topics such as tax, national insurance, budgeting and payslips.
  4. Sexual health including topics on contraception, pornography, CSE, consent and STIs
  5. The LGBTQ+ community 
  6. Issues of poor friendships such as pee pressure and selfie sharing

Year 10

In Year 10, PSHE materials are delivered in form time sessions with the students form tutors. These sessions are focused on careers, creating a personal statement and a CV as well as Citizenship. 

Year 10 also have stand-alone PSHE sessions which cover the following issues:

  1. First Aid focusing mainly on CPR
  2. Sexism and Same Sex Relationships 
  3. Obesity and Body Positivity
  4. Study Skills – time management, the importance of sleep, the issue of screen time and the difference between procrastination and perseverance
  5. Sexual health such as fertility and reproductive health.
  6. Managing tough times e.g. bereavement 

Year 11

In Year 11, PSHE materials are delivered in form time sessions with the students form tutors. These sessions are focused on carers and preparing for their Post 16 steps.

Year 11 also have stand-alone PSHE sessions which cover the following issues:

  1. College applications 
  2. Independent living and preparing for future steps 
  3. Relationships including: types of relationships, sexual harassment, relationship break ups and what makes good sex.
  4. Internet safety and online gambling.
